Shark Week 2026: Celebrate, Learn & Shop for a Cause
Shark Week 2026 kicks off Sunday, July 26 and runs nightly through Saturday, August 1 on the Discovery Channel — and we are so here for it. Whether you're a lifelong shark fanatic or just discovering your love for the ocean's most misunderstood predators, this is the week to dive deep.
At Young Eden, we believe in raising kids who love and protect the natural world. That's why we're celebrating Shark Week with a roundup of jaw-dropping facts, critical conservation stats, and our favorite ocean-inspired finds for the whole family.
What Is Shark Week?
Shark Week is the longest-running cable TV event in history. Launched on July 17, 1988 by the Discovery Channel, it was originally conceived not to sensationalize sharks — but to correct fear-driven misconceptions and promote conservation. Over 38 years later, it has grown into a massive pop culture phenomenon featuring:
Scientific Expeditions — Marine biologists tagging, tracking, and studying shark species in the wild
Documentary Specials — Dramatic, educational deep-dives into shark behavior, prehistoric predators, and ocean ecosystems
Celebrity Features — Actors, athletes, and public figures joining shark-related adventures on the open ocean
Fun Shark Facts for Kids!
Sharks are some of the most incredible animals on Earth. Here are a few facts that will blow little minds:
Sharks have roamed the ocean for over 450 million years — that makes them older than the dinosaurs!
Unlike most fish, sharks have no bones — their skeletons are made entirely of flexible cartilage.
Shark skin feels like rough sandpaper because it's covered in tiny tooth-like scales called dermal denticles.
There are over 500 different species of sharks — from the tiny dwarf lanternshark (fits in your hand!) to the massive whale shark.
Super Shark Senses
Sharks are the ultimate ocean hunters — and their senses are out of this world:
They have an incredible sense of smell and can detect a single drop of blood from miles away.
They possess a secret sixth sense — special organs called ampullae of Lorenzini that detect the tiny electric pulses given off by other animals, helping them track prey even in murky water.
Why Sharks Need Our Help: Key Conservation Stats
As amazing as sharks are, they are in serious trouble — and the numbers tell a sobering story:
- 37% of all shark and ray species face extinction, driven by overfishing, by catch, and the international fin trade.
- An estimated 73 to 100 million sharks are killed by humans every single year.
- About 25 million of those are threatened species.
- Pelagic (open ocean) shark populations have plummeted by 71% in the past 50 years.
- Roughly 66.9% of shark species suffer from an unfavorable conservation status due to accidental bycatch in commercial fisheries.
- Sharks reach maturity late and produce very few offspring, making them uniquely vulnerable to rapid over-exploitation.
- The good news: nearly 70% of maritime jurisdictions now have regulations or bans targeting shark finning — but targeted fishing for meat and the broader shark product trade continue to drive high mortality.
The IUCN lists over 30% of shark species as threatened. With slow reproduction rates, populations simply cannot recover fast enough when millions are killed each year.

Shark Week is a great reminder — but sharks need our support 365 days a year. Here are a few simple ways to make a difference:
- Shop with purpose — choose products that give back to ocean conservation (like ours!)
- Choose sustainable seafood — look for MSC-certified labels and avoid shark fin products
- Spread the word — share shark facts with your kids, friends, and community
- Reduce plastic use — ocean pollution is a major threat to all marine life
- Support shark conservation orgs — organizations like Oceana, Shark Trust, and WildAid work year-round to protect sharks globally
Happy Shark Week from all of us at Young Eden! Let's celebrate these incredible animals together.
